Įmpedocles described Pythagoras as "a man of surpassing knowledge, master especially of all kinds of wise works, who had acquired the upmost wealth of understanding." In the 4th century BC the Sophist Alcidamas wrote that Pythagoras was widely honored by Italians. distinguished for his manly virtue and modesty, even in death has a life which is pleasing to his soul, if Pythagoras the wise truly achieved knowledge and understanding beyond that of all men. By that time, he was known as a sage and his fame had spread throughout Greece. Both were born in the 490s, after Pythagoras' death. Two other surviving fragments of ancient sources on Pythagoras are by Ion of Chios and Empedocles. Pythagoras, the son of Mnesarchus, practised inquiry beyond all other men and selecting of these writings made for himself a wisdom or made a wisdom of his own: a polymathy, an imposture. In a surviving fragment from Heraclitus, Pythagoras and his followers are described as follows: That I recognised when I heard it giving tongue." "Stop! Do not beat it! For it is the soul of a friend Once they say that he was passing by when a puppy was being whipped, The earliest surviving ancient source on Pythagoras and his followers is a satire by Xenophanes, on the Pythagorean beliefs on the transmigration of souls. Neopythagorean philosophers, who authored many of the surviving sources on Pythagoreanism, continued the tradition of legend and fantasy. Philosophers who discussed Pythagoreanism, such as Anaximander, Andron of Ephesus, Heraclides and Neanthes had access to historical written sources as well as the oral tradition about Pythagoreanism, which by the 4th century BC was in decline. The surviving 5th century BC sources on Pythagoras and early Pythagoreanism are void of supernatural elements, while surviving 4th century BC sources on Pythagoras' teachings introduced legend and fable. Much of the surviving sources on Pythagoras originated with Aristotle and the philosophers of the Peripatetic school, which founded historiographical academic traditions such as biography, doxography and the history of science. Antique sources that credit Pythagoras as the philosopher who first discovered music intervals also credit him as the inventor of the monochord, a straight rod on which a string and a movable bridge could be used to demonstrate the relationship of musical intervals. In ancient times Pythagoras was also noted for his discovery that music had mathematical foundations. Pythagoras had been credited with discovering that in a right-angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Pythagoras was already well known in ancient times for the mathematical achievement of the Pythagorean theorem. Bust of Pythagoras, Musei Capitolini, Rome. Animation demonstrating the simplest Pythagorean triple, 3 2 + 4 2 = 5 2. History The Plimpton 322 tablet records Pythagorean triples from Babylonian times. The worship of Pythagoras continued in Italy and as a religious community Pythagoreans appear to have survived as part of, or deeply influenced, the Bacchic cults and Orphism. Many of the surviving sources on Pythagoras originate with Aristotle and the philosophers of the Peripatetic school.Īs a philosophic tradition, Pythagoreanism was revived in the 1st century BC, giving rise to Neopythagoreanism. Pythagorean ideas exercised a marked influence on Plato and through him, on all of Western philosophy. By about 400 BC the majority of Pythagorean philosophers had left Italy. The mathēmatikoi philosophers were absorbed into the Platonic school in the 4th century BC.įollowing political instability in Magna Graecia, some Pythagorean philosophers fled to mainland Greece while others regrouped in Rhegium. The akousmatikoi were superseded in the 4th century BC as a significant mendicant school of philosophy by the Cynics. Pythagoras' death and disputes about his teachings led to the development of two philosophical traditions within Pythagoreanism. Early Pythagorean communities spread throughout Magna Graecia. Pythagoras established the first Pythagorean community in the ancient Greek colony of Kroton, in modern Calabria (Italy). Pythagoreanism originated in the 6th century BC, based on and around the teachings and beliefs held by Pythagoras and his followers, the Pythagoreans. In Raphael's fresco The School of Athens, Pythagoras is shown writing in a book as a young man presents him with a tablet showing a diagrammatic representation of music theory on a lyre above a drawing of the sacred tetractys. The first Microsoft Word was released in 1983. In 2014, the source code for Word for Windows version 1.1a was made available to the Computer History Museum and the public for educational purposes. The release of Microsoft Write in 1988 was one of two major PC applications to be released for the Atari ST (the other application being WordPerfect). Unlike other versions of Word, the Atari version was a one-time release with no future updates or revisions. The Atari ST version was a translation of Word 1.05 for the Apple Macintosh however, it was released under the name Microsoft Write (the name of the word processor included with Windows during the 1980s and early 1990s). In 1986, an agreement between Atari and Microsoft brought Word to the Atari ST. Since then, Windows versions include Word 2007, Word 2010, Word 2013, Word 2016, and most recently, Word for Office 365. With the release of Word 2003, the numbering was again year-based. Then it was renamed to Word 95 and Word 97, Word 2000 and Word for Office XP (to follow Windows commercial names). Word for Windows 1.0 was followed by Word 2.0 in 1991 and Word 6.0 in 1993. When Windows 3.0 was released in 1990, Word became a huge commercial success. The first Windows version was released in 1989, with a slightly improved interface. The first Word version, Word 1.0, was released in October 1983 for Xenix and MS-DOS it was followed by four very similar versions that were not very successful. Both programmers worked on Xerox Bravo, the first WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) word processor. Good locations for autumn sage are slopes, banks, and naturalized areas. It is drought and slightly salt tolerant. This plant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators and is seldom damaged by deer. The cultivar 'Wild Thing' reportedly has better winter hardiness than species plants. It needs well-drained soil, and tolerates rocky soil. This sage prefers full sun but tolerates afternoon shade in regions with high summer heat. Greggi is in honor of Josiah Gregg (1806-1850), a botanist and explorer who discovered the plant on an exploration through Texas. Salvia, the genus name, comes from the Latin word salveo, meaning ‘be well’. Different cultivars offer flower colors from red to coral, and some are mixed with white. Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it is native to Texas and found mainly on rocky slopes. Provide a full sun to partly shaded site in well-drained, average moist, fertile soils for optimum vigor and flowering. In areas where hard freezes do not occur, this sage may develop a shrubby semi-woody base, while in zone 8 and colder, established plants act more like herbaceous perennials dying back to near ground level and returning in early spring. The flowers attract hummingbirds, larger bees, and the occasional butterfly. Cuello Pink Salvia, a hybrid developed by the UK's Salvia guru David Dyson of Dyson's Nurseries, was selected for its profusion of sweetly colored flowers, reliability, and bushy habit making it a useful container specimen as well as a colorful addition to a sunny garden or landscape. But in 1962, the responsibility of running the company fell on his shoulders, and he found himself faced with the daunting task of safeguarding his ancestor’s legacy while at the same time forging his own. He had already played a role in the design of some timepieces, starting with the Solunar in the late 1940s. In 1962, Jack Heuer inherited the company that his great-grandfather had founded in Saint-Imier nearly a century before. It’s a cool relic from a very specific period in modern watchmaking, and one we don’t see too many of. Paired to the watch is a stainless steel, multi-link bracelet with a signed deployant clasp.ĭating to the early 2010s, this Carrera is from a time when TAG Heuer was taking big risks, designing chronographs unlike any the watch world had ever seen. COSC-certified, it’s visible via a sapphire display caseback. Said technology, by the way, is the TAG Heuer Calibre 16, an automatic chronograph based on the architecture of none other than the famed Zenith El Primero family of movements. It features a luminous blue dial with applied ‘doorstop’ indices and a matching handset, and a sophisticated chronograph with a ‘caliper’ scale that allows one to measure elapsed 1/10ths of a second. Innovative and bold, it’s housed in a 43mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, ribbed pushers, a signed, red crown for the inner bezel, and a steel tachymeter bezel. The Grand Carrera Calibre 36 Caliper Chronograph that we have here, however, is a long way off from those simple, early chronographs envisioned in the early 1960s. However, in the mid-1990s TAG Heuer realized that its classic designs still held value in the commercial market, and decided to re-release two watches: the square-cased Monaco and the Carrera. In the 1980s, after Heuer was bought by Techniques Avant Garde (TAG), the Carrera line was discontinued. The original ran from the 1960s to the 1980s, its look shifting slightly as trends changed, ultimately taking on the cushion case design and automatic movements of the late 1960s and 1970s. Jack wanted a watch that was stylish and functional - a watch that gives you everything you need, and nothing you don’t. To AirDrop from an iPhone to a Mac isn’t quite so straightforward currently. You should see an alert on our phone to let you know that an image is incoming If you do see your iPhone in the finder window you can drag and drop whatever you wanted to share onto the icon representing the iPhone. Our iPhone would generally show up on our Mac but seeing our Mac as an AirDrop in the share options was rare. In reality it seems to work better from Mac to iPhone. Now you should see the iPhone in the AirDrop window in the Finder on your Mac and the Mac should show up on your iPhone or iPad as a sharing option. You could be browsing a webpage in Safari on your iPhone, and your Mac will show a Safari icon on the left of your Dock, click on this and you can open the same webpage on your Mac. Once it’s on the Mac, it’s gone from the iPhone. In our experience it was not possible to hand the email back to the iPhone though. Now you can continue writing the email in Mail, and then, when you are ready to send it, you can do so from your Mac. You can just click on this icon and Mail will open, showcasing your email in all its glory. Presuming you are on the same network, when you get into the office, with your iPhone in hand as you tap in a draft of your email, your Mac should show a Mail icon to the left of your dock, alerting you to the fact that it is aware of the email you are composing. You simply need to be logged into iCloud on both devices and on the same WiFi network (which means that if you are sharing your Wi-Fi connection from your Mac, as we do when we are in the office, it won’t work). Check the signal strength and battery of your iPhone hotspot If you want to remove an entry from the list, just right-click or Ctrl+click it and select the Delete option from the menu that appears. Instead, just start FaceTime and look at the recent call list for Audio. Incidentally, your missed call history now automatically syncs between your phone and your Mac via iCloud, so you don’t have to fish your phone out of your pocket to see what that missed call was. (SMS sending requires iOS 8.1 to be installed on your iPhone.) You can also select Send Message, which will send an iMessage or standard text message, depending on whether your recipient has an iOS device. The FaceTime app will open on your Mac and attempt to make the call. Just click the heading alongside the number you want to dial, and select Call from the menu that appears. In Yosemite the Contacts app becomes a lot more useful because you can use it to initiate phone calls, assuming you have your iPhone logged into the same iCloud account as your Mac and it’s on the same Wi-Fi network. It’s similar to the iOS equivalent (although with a much larger screen). You can findįinally there is the new Show All Tabs feature in Safari. You can choose to add feeds from the sites you have added to your Favorites, or find the RSS feed page of a website, click on the feed link shown, and you should get the option to add it to your Shared Links. To do so, click on Subscriptions at the bottom of the column, and click on Add Feed. New in Yosemite’s Safari is the ability to add RSS feeds to this column. Once you have signed in your Twitter account all the shares will appear in the Safari sidebar.) (If you aren’t seeing Tweets, go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Twitter and then add your details. Here you will also find all the stories being shared by your Twitter friends, also a feature of Mavericks. You can reveal the Reading List view by clicking on the icon beside the back and forward arrows, top left. Just hover over the search bar and click on the + sign that appears in the corner. One of the new features in OS X Mavericks was the ability to add a webpage to your Safari Reading List. Your Favorites will be available across all your Apple devices as long as you have set Safari to sync via iCloud (on your iPhone that’s Settings > iCloud). To add a site to your favorites tap cmd-D and choose Add to Favouites. If you open the Favorites view, you can change the order of your favorites by clicking and dragging them around.Īdding a favorite isn’t so obvious. There’s not really any need to set up both, we tend to use Favourites rather than Top Sites, especially as that integrates with the search field. The star is for Favourites, the dots represents your Top Sites view. You’ll see tabs on the right of the window, one is a star and the other a group of dots. When you open a new Safari window (cmd-n) or a new Safari tab (cmd-t) you will see either a bigger view of your Favorites, or the Top Sites view. You will see icons of all your favorite websites in this drop down menu. The first of these is the new Smart Search Field, which appears as a drop down menu when you click in the search/url field. Then when I was getting ready to leave he charged me $27. And he without asking me took all my nail polish off change the nail polish gave me a fill I thought the experience was going to be free so I let him. I came back in to get my nail fixed again. My nails were good for a couple of days, and then they start breaking again they broke a total of six times in one set. So this is three times that I came back in. Came back in the third day, and they fixed another nail. Next day came back and because another one broke. I got my nails done and by the next day one had chipped. I just had the worst customer experience ive ever had. Ome was an awful review (old owners) then i had an amazing experience with the mew owners and they became my new nail place. I have left 2 different reviews about this place. They are a very sweet couple, and from what I've observed from my visits here so far, they genuinely want you to be happy with your nails. Or if you've had a bad experience with them, I truly believe if you say something to them right then, they will fix it for you. Emily and her husband own this place and bought it just a year or two ago, so if you've had a bad experience here in the past (before they bought it) I would recommend giving it another try. Obviously you have to have the time to have this one done but if you have the time it is definitely worth it and it is so "SUPER relaxing". I think the pedicure lasted an hour and a half. They do offer $25 and up pedicure options, but I wanted to see what the $75 option was like so that's the one I picked. I've only had one pedicure here and it was the "SUPER RELAX SPECIAL" for $75. Maybe because she is not so hurried to finish and she does a more complete job, not to mention a gel manicure is $5 less here than at my other salon. I don't know if it's the technique Emily uses, or the UV light she uses with the gel manicure polish, or what it is exactly, but my gel polish stays on twice as long since I've had Emily do them versus the other salon. My nails went from being very short and brittle in three months to now being long, very strong and pretty. It's very intimate, it's not hectic with 30 people running all around trying to squeeze in that next person. I love that the location is quiet and more private than the other salon that I went to. Emily does my nails and (one) pedicure and I absolutely love her.
